Welcome fellow blog hoppers on this the next leg of the Blog Tour de Troops weekend! I hope you enjoyed your visit with my fellow author C.C. Cole if you missed her blog check it out.
I am grateful to the men and women who are serving, or have served in our military forces. It is because of their selflessness and courage that we are safe and free to pursue our dreams. When I heard about the Blog Tour de Troops plan to give free books to the soldiers who are serving our country. I jumped at the chance to participate.
A number of years ago, I did a genealogy search on my family. Going back 12 generations I found many of my forefathers served proudly over the centuries in our military. From a father and sun who served multiple tours together in the revolutionary war. To others who fought in world war 1 , 2, and Vietnam. They served their country with honor as do the men and women in our armed forces today. We would not be here today if not for their service and sacrifice, as will our children’s children be here because of those who fight today to keep our freedom.
For this veterans weekend event, I thought I would share a short personal story. My father when world war II broke out, was not old enough to enlist in the armed forces, so he joined the merchant marines. When he turned 18, he immediately enlisted in the army. I am the youngest of three, so I don’t know if it was the time span, or having told the tales too many times to my brothers, but my father never talked about the war. Yet, he was strangely addicted to the mind-boggling horde of world war II movies that followed. I don’t think he missed a single one. As a kid these movies were great, lots of action, explosions and suspense. (blood and gore not withstanding) But that was all they were, entertainment. It always left me with a surreal vision of war.
On weekends, I would get to stay up late and watch these movies with my father. It was a special time the two of us would share. One evening, the two of us were watching a remake on the D-Day invasion. We were quietly sitting watching the scenes of the transports hitting the beach as the waves of troops disembarked to engage the enemy. In one scene, If I remember it correctly, a heavy cable was strung between two ships to move supplies to the beach. A large wave broke shifting the position of the cable catching a supply transport on its way to the beach. The transport was flipped over, the men and supplies on board tossed into the sea. It was at that moment out of the blue my father said “I was on that” I wasn’t sure what he meant by the remark so I questioned him. It turns out the scene we were watching actually happened. The transport was a merchant marine craft and he was part of its crew. They were ferrying supplies to shore when the cable caught the ship and flipped it over. My father hit the water but made it to safety.
From that moment on, those movies had a whole new meaning. I found myself wondering how may other scenes were based on actual event. It gave me a new appreciation and understanding for those soldiers in our armed forces. So to all of you currently serving, and to the memory of those who have passed, I say thank you!
Hopefully I haven’t put anyone to sleep with my ramblings, if so WAKE UP! 😉 I want to thank you all for stopping by on this leg of the Blog Tour de Troops your next stop is with the talented A.K. Taylor check her out!

Hi Stephanie Thank you for thanking a moment of your weekend to post for our troops. i appreciate it
What an amazing story about your father! I can’t even imagine how you must have felt in that moment. I’m so glad he shared that with you. My father served in Vietnam and only mentioned a few things to me, and even only then when he was terminally ill due to his exposure to Agent Orange. I wish we’d had more time and I could have learned more about his service.
Thank you so much for participating in this. I’m looking forward to reading your book. You can find me at DinozzoGibbs @ gmail.com
Hi BJ thank you for sharing about your father. I’ve known a lot of people who have served our country. Most never wanted to talk about their service. It’s too bad. i appreciate you taking the time to post

Hi Pauline Thank you for taking the time to post in support of our troops. I appreciate it!
Thank you so very much for sharing your story with us.
My grandfather served in WWII, I wasn’t around back then. He never talked about his time either.
Through my life, I was always allowed to be one of those that never thought much about the Military. Until one July 4th afternoon. I met my husband that day. He told me from the start that he was in the Army. We very quickly fell in love. Four days after we met we moved in together, four days after that he got his deployment orders. We met fell in love, and got married very quickly. But one thing we both know for sure, this is who we are meant to spend our lives with. I’m a proud woman, so very proud of my husband.

This is such a wonderful event, thank you so much for participating and honoring our veterans on their day and giving to our troops the joy of a good book. Hi Denise Thank you for sharing with us today and for taking the time to post. Without these posts, we would not be able to donate. Providing you with a copy of my books is the least I can do for your generousity to our troops. Thank you!
I had heard of the merchant marines but I didn’t know that they were for underage boys. That has to be a little strange to be watching a movie and be told that someone you know has actually done it.
Thank you for participating in this great tour, I look forward to reading your book!
melorabrock {at} gmail {dot} com
Hi Anme Thank you so much for your support of our troops. i appreciate you taking the time to post. It was wierd that day. I’ll never forget it. Thanks for supporting the troops. Please send my copy to the troops as well. Thanks again.
John Thank you so much for your support. i will forward your request of the second copy to the event organizers. Hi Janey wow, there were a lot of thank yous in that comment 🙂 The only thing I can do is to add a few more by saying thank you for taking the time to post. Wihtout these posts the troops would not get thebooks. I appreciate your effort and support!
I enjoyed your story about your dad and the movies. My brother and I also have logged quite a bit of time with dad and his war movies. He would tell us more about the scene from his memories or the memories of his friends too. His ‘me and a buddy of mine’ or ‘a buddy of mine’ (such camaraderie amongst those who serve(d)).
Thanks for participating in the hop tour for the troops and for generously donating your book.

Hi Jean Thanks for taking the time to post a comment. Without your support our troops would not benefit from our efforts. I appreciate it!
Glenn, thanks for sharing the story about how your dad’s revelation changed the way you view WWII films. My maternal grandfather & 2 of his brothers served in WWII, one of his brothers didn’t make it back home. Grandpa didn’t talk about his time in the service. He never said as much, but I believe he couldn’t handle remembering all he he had to do & the friends he saw die. I will never take for granted the freedoms I enjoy because of the sacrifices so many have made.

Glenn!! You’re amazing. And what a wonderful story. Well, presumably not wonderful for your Dad at the time, but something I guess we all tend to forget, that war movies are based on wars, real events. It’s far too easy to get de-sensitised to it all.
Hey there my Friend tahnk you SO MUCH for your support! I really appreciate you for taking the time to post. I agree with you, it is all to easy to get desensitized watching movies.
Thanks for being part of the tour and supporting the troops!

Hi Tanisha Thank you so much for your participation posting on my blog. it is through these posts that we are able to support our troops. I really appreciate your efforts!
I am glad you got to spend time with your father truely i am. Now my short story.
First i want to thank you for all you do for helping all the men and women of the armed forces. I am a war orphan from during the Vietnam Era. My my father left our house one day in 1962 with a group of men from fort Benning georgia where my little brother was only a month old. Well He and the whole group went missing right after leaving Saigon never to be herad from again not even as p.o.w, Not long after being in vietnam. My Mom was left in a strange State with eight kids with no family to fend for herself, My father was an E7 at this time and always worked 2 jobs to have enough money to support us. Well it took over ten years to delecare him dead and my mom lost our home and we had to rent a much smaller place. She never remarried or dated. She loved him to the day she died. Want i am getting at is that we had no support or even family support raising up. We were just forgotten. It was so hard for my mom. I just want to never see this happen to any other military family ever again. Thanks joannie jscddmj [at] aol [dot] com
Hi Joannie Thank you for sharing your story. I agree, no family should be forgotten after a trajedy. the world is not a perfect place. But your efforts to right those wrongs will hopefully help or inspire someone to do what’s right one day. Thank You!
This is such a great cause! Thank you for sharing your story. I wish I had a more interesting comment though 🙂

Hi Thank you so very much for taking a moment to post in support of our troops! I appreciate it!
Both of my grandfather’s were in the military, but both have passed away so I cannot talk to them about what happened during their service. My grandfather in-law is still alive and served in the Navy. I enjoy listening to him tell the stories of his service.
Thanks for honoring the service men and women by doing this blogfest and giving them ebooks.

I’m so glad there’s another Tour de Troops!! Can’t wait to see if there’s more comments than Memorial Day! What a great way to give our troops a little escape in a book while they are away from home and at war. Thanks IndieBookCollective!! My dad was in the Navy for 12 years and I was a Navy Brat, so those who serve in the military hold a special place in heart. Thanks for the free book – can’t wait to read your story!
I would like the troop book to go to my cousin Zachary Neer serving in the United States Army in Afghanistan.

If everyone is going to take the time to post the least I can do is say thank you. though I do feel bad the posts seem almost canned. They were not really. I have just been rushed keeping up. Thank you again for your support!
My dad was a WWII vet and landed at Omaha Beach on D-day. He didn’t live quite long enough to go on one of the Honor Tours and he didn’t talk about the war but he looked very dashing in the pictures. : )
Thanks for the book and thanks for supporting our troops

Hi Diane thank you for posting in support of our troops and for sharing the information about your father. I haven’t seen the pictures so i will ahve to take your word that he is “Dashing” Thank you so much for participating in this event. i really appreciate it.
thanks for doing this. As an army veteran of multiple deployments, I can assure you that reading provides sanity and a chance to explore worlds outside the dust/rain/dirt of the present un-fun. With the advent of eBook readers it has become even easier to read, try new authors and to feel less cut off from the world.
sincerely – Holly (prosekniticATyahooDOTde)

What a great post. It’s great that you had that bond with your father and that he told you how he was one that. It must have been an eye opening event. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the troops/heroes in and out of service for what you’ve done for all of us.

I admire what you all are doing. As a child of the military, (my mom, biological father, and step father, all are military, in various branches, not to mention aunts, uncles, and grandparents), it’s always been part of my life, so I think it’s really nice when people acknowledge what they spend their lives devoted towards.

Day late and a dollar short, I just found this blog tour a couple hours ago and have been going as fast as I can. We have 3 vets in the family including me and my youngest son is about to enter. Whether you want to count is up to you. My hubby served over 20 years and still spend a lot of time TDY for the AF but civil service. I write MG/YA SF/fantasy. sherahart at gmail dot com
