I purchased this book when it debuted mainly due to the enthusiastic tweets of its proud author. Reading the synopsis on amazon, it peaked my interest. The story revolves around Thistle Nettlebottom, a bored 17-year-old who has spent most of her life living out of a pink RV following her famous grandmother from one book signing to another. Her whole life to date has been  that RV, her mother, & their driver Shep. A situation that abruptly changes with a single phone call. Suddenly, they are on their way to see a dying relative. Her whole life as she discovers was a well planned illusion, one created to protect her from herself and the people of the quiet town of Desire.

Upon their arrival Thistle learns her true identity and meets the picturesque town of Desire, peaceful & beautiful, it holds a deadly secret that she will soon learn. Thistle as she soon discovers is a powerful witch with a unique power, the power to wish.

I found the story well written & fast paced. The beginning is a bit slow, but the tempo picks up quickly. The author does a good job creating the world of Desire, and the characters within. She does an excellent job recreating the complexities of social order of both the high school students and the towns people who rule it.

My only complaints with the story are minor, I thought the application of the magic could have been a bit better portrayed and the ending left me feeling like it was a contradiction, but then again, having raised 3 daughters of my own, a “contradiction” is sometimes a perfect description of a 17-year-old. I highly recommend this book, I intend to pass it on to my grand daughters to read. I give this book 4 stars!

I learned of this author through an indie author group. I read his introduction and brief description of his book in their forum and being a sci-fi/fantasy lover, the plot of  our world 100 years from now on the verge of genocide intrigued me. I purchased a copy and have never regretted the decision. This is an excellent sci-fi/political thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seats though out the story.

Visualize a world in our not to distance future having been shaped by turmoil and destruction where we are now one people, one world. A world where everyone’s identity, information and wealth is carried in a personal communicator. Where travel between countries is fast & easy. A place where everyone contributes to the betterment of society. A world at peace, or is it.

The story revolves around an arbitrator named Jonah Oliver, called in to interrogate a mysterious prisoner named Jibril Muraz. In the blink of an eye, Jonah’s world is shattered and replaced by a terrifying reality culminating to the knowledge that most of the world’s population will die on 3/15/2110 From there, the story explodes into a fast paced thriller with believable technologies and more than enough twists and turns to keep us glued to our seats. The author did an excellent job making the future technology portrayed in the story both feasible and believable.

My only complaint about the book and it minor, is that I would have liked to see the relationships between players defined a bit more. In some cases the exposure of a relationship seemed more like a flashback to an event in someones ind rather than a current affair. Again though, this is just a minor point, the swiftly moving constantly shifting plot more than compensates. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

I give Tag 5 stars A job well done Simon!

The Keya Quests: The Battle for Shivenridge Paperback Cover

The production of  “The Battle for Shivenridge” book 2 of the Keya Quests series is moving right along. Below is the back cover text. I welcome your comments. My friends at Outskirts Press did the final polish.

Guardians, to Arms!

With destiny on her side and supernatural forces unleashed that she never could have imagined, Keya has triumphed: she has found the warrior of legend who will save her people from the evil Lord Randar. But she finds that her epic quest has only begun — now they must free the people of Shivenridge. Keya’s army charges through the portal and races into the raging battle below.

But is Shivenridge ready to accept what Keya brings? Years of war and hardship have fostered suspicion, and the people have mixed feelings about the legendary Black Sword  and the warrior who wields it. New friends, old enemies, betrayals, and dreams of destruction abound. Keya must come to terms with a psychic’s prediction, and an ancient book that holds the key. A curse must be broken, and there is a secret to be revealed. Keya’s life has been drastically changed, giving her new resources of personal power and emotional strength, but she still struggles with doubts and fears that may be her demise.

As Keya and her companions embrace the elation and frustration of adjusting to their new roles in Shivenridge, the portal between the worlds remains ready to be used…or misused. There are friends waiting to join Keya in her quest, but Lord Randar’s legacy of evil lives on in his lieutenant, who shares Randar’s lust for power and revenge.

Join us now in the next adventure with a uniquely endearing heroine whose impulsiveness, courage, integrity, and innocence combine to make her both deeply human and immensely powerful. Will her gifts allow her to overcome the odds again? Or will the price of freedom for Shivenridge prove to be too high?

In Memory of Greed

I’m normally not a great fan of political/espionage stories, however, I was intrigued by the chatter across twitter of this book and the brilliant author who wrote it. I decided to download it and find out what it was all about. Let me tell you I am so glad I did. This is a well written book that in my opinion transcends the genre. The story unfolds with an ex navy seal Murhkin Mocado late for a doctor’s appointment. It quickly swells to a fast paced story of corporate and government corruption that spans multiple continents and countries. By the third chapter I was completely engulfed in the well written plot and the rich, full of life characters created by this author. The pace never lets up taking the reader around the world in this complex maze of plots and twists.

As little as five years ago, this tale might have been considered borderline science fiction but in today’s world it is hauntingly all to real. My only complaints with the story is the 80 plus chapters, personally I would have preferred less but longer chapters but that as I said is a preference. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a gripping tale of espionage and corruption. Make sure you allow yourself some free time before you start, because you are not going to want to stop once you begin. I give In Memory of greed 5 stars. I can’t wait to read this author’s next book

In memory of Greed can be puchased at Amazon, and Barnes & Noble  to name a few.

Loose Ends by AJ Powers

Eric Caldwell is a quiet man with deadly intentions. You see he’s a professional hitman. By day he is a simple businessman running a small bar with his geeky sidekick Rebekah, but behind the scenes the two of them are an effective killing machine. They take great care making sure every “Loose end” is covered. They’re latest mark is a man whose hobby strikes a nerve with Caldwell making it a bit too personal for his profession.

Loose Ends is a well written thriller/mystery novella albeit short. The characters are well-defined and come alive on the pages. The story moves swiftly without any lags and the twist at the end leaves you pressing the next page button crying out for more. I would have liked to see more of the relationship between Caldwell and Rebekah. It would have been nice to learn a bit more of his past. All in all it was an enjoyable short read that I highly recommend. I give Loose ends a 4 star rating!

Loose Ends is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or Smashwords.

The paperback and hardbound editions of the next book in the Keya Quests series has gone into production. I have chosen to go back with my friends at Outskirts Press, while I may not always agree with everything they do. I never doubt their integrity or their sincerity at bringing a book to print. After a week of questions, uploads, choices and decisions. The book has now officially gone into the production. I have asked them to create three illustrations for this book. If all goes well, we should reach its publication in 7-10 weeks. This timeframe is contingent upon quite a few variables so it may slip, but I have every belief they will give me 110% as they have in the past.

The Keya Quests: The Battle for Shivenridge is 10k larger than the first book in the series. Despite my determination to make this a shorter edition, the voices in my head had other plans. I plan to wait to release the e-book editions to coincide with the printed editions. I have chosen despite much debate to keep both the soft bound and hard bound at 6 x 9 to maintain consistency between books. I had considered shrinking them to 5.5 x 8.5 to take advantage of the postal service flat rate priority mail package, but decided the consistency was better.

I had no idea what I was doing when I wrote the first book in the series. I knew I had a story I wanted to tell. My writing style is out of the ordinary, I write third person present tense using simple dialogue, it’s not something a devout reader can adjust. It is however, the perfect format for my intended target. In the second book, I have adjusted the style  just a little to try and find a middle point, time will tell if the move was right or wrong.

Since the first book was published, I have been fortunate to have found twitter and a little thing called hashtags. Through them, I have connected to hundreds of “kindred spirits” talented writers putting out great works of literature who are willing to exchange ideas and views among fellow writes. My two favorite hashtags are #amwriting founded by Joanna Harness and the #pubwrite a group of great authors who get together in a virtual pub to kick back and exchange ideas and lend support while having a “virtual” pint. Through these hash tags I have met some great people and have found some really good literature that I am sure will keep me busy reading during this round of publishing.

I will keep all my readers and fans updated with the progress of the book. Thanks for your support. The third book in the series will be started soon. Title not yet decided.

Gabriel’s Redemption takes us into a highly believable glimpse of mankind’s not too distant future. The story revolves around a dishonored North American Federation Naval special forces commander Evan Gabriel, called back into active duty for a special mission. He is enticed with promises of redemption for past convictions. The Story takes place in a distant galaxy on a desolate ice-covered planet. The story is well written, and the characters are brought masterfully to life by the author. You are pulled quickly into the story and the pace never let’s up until the very end. The world of this future is both believable and interesting. The author took great care covering the smallest of details to make this world perfect. The plot has finely woven twists and turns to keep you on your feet. The technology portrayed through out the story is both interesting and believable. Enough for any Sci Fi junkie.

I found this book a thoroughly enjoyable read. I could not put it down. This is a very well written Sci Fi action adventure. I highly recommend it to any age. I give it 5 stars I can’t wait for book 2!

Gabriel’s Redemption – Book 1 of the Evan Gabriel Trilogy is now available for Kindle, Nook, iPad, and more. Visit the author’s website: http://www.SteveUmstead.com for details!
